PNE, a global renewable energy developer, reinforces its commitment to the sector by setting a goal to expand its global portfolio to 20 GW. According to Kathrin Markus, Corporate Communications Lead, the project portfolio reached 17,768 GW as of September 30, 2024, solidifying the company’s position as a key player in the energy transition.
«Our focus has always been on offering innovative and reliable solutions, aligned with our objective to pioneer project development and lead the industry,» emphasizes Markus in conversation with Energía Estratégica España With more than 650 employees worldwide, the group is dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies to drive the energy transition.
Technological Diversification: Hydrogen and Beyond
In addition to its expertise in wind and photovoltaic energy, PNE is betting on technological diversification by developing battery storage, hydrogen, and power-to-X solutions. The company representative highlights that PNE is working on power-to-liquid projects, such as e-fuels like methanol or ammonia, power-to-gas for hydrogen, and power-to-heat solutions to replace aging power plants.
Green hydrogen is a strategic focus. In markets like Germany, Poland, and South Africa, the group has already initiated projects while evaluating new opportunities in Spain and Canada. «These projects are not only sustainable but also commercially viable in promising markets,» Markus adds.
Strategic Objectives: «Scale up 2.0»
The company has introduced its «Scale up 2.0» strategy, which defines ambitious goals, including achieving an EBITDA of over €150 million annually and managing a portfolio of 20 GW. Additionally, PNE aims to expand its proprietary generation portfolio to 1,500 MW/MWp and manage over 3,500 MW/MWp in operations and maintenance.
Italy and Romania: Strategic Markets
PNE’s presence in Italy and Romania is pivotal to achieving these objectives. Regionally, in Italy, the company holds a 456 MWp solar portfolio, while in Romania, it has 815 MWp photovoltaic projects as of September 2024. Both countries present significant opportunities and unique challenges.
Italy plans to substantially increase its share of renewable energy. The Italian government is focusing on photovoltaics as a core technology, aiming for 35 GWp by 2030. This approach reflects low generation costs and the need to balance the regional distribution of projects.
«The draft Ministerial Decree ‘Suitable Areas’ projects an increase of 80 GWp of renewable energy from 2024 to 2030 (approximately 72 GWp from 2023 to 2030), mainly from photovoltaic and wind sources. It sets regional targets to achieve balanced distribution over the coming years,» Markus analyzes.
However, Markus points out that the decree has not yet been published due to disagreements and discussions between the Ministry of Environment (MASE) and regional authorities.
Romania, on the other hand, aims to increase its share of renewable energy in gross final consumption to 38,3% by 2030, as per European guidelines. Currently, this figure stands at 23.6%.
«The Romanian government is creating the necessary legal framework for developing renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and green hydrogen while adopting new laws to accelerate development processes, such as land-use changes. Since 2022, private PPAs have been possible. Additionally, CFD auctions (Contracts for Difference) have been announced for next year,» Markus details.
The Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIESC) has already raised the national target to 36% by 2030. «The promotion of photovoltaic projects is leveraging growing investor interest and capitalizing on time windows for project sales,» Markus concludes.
