Romania advances in renewable energy development. According to data published by the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), the country’s total installed energy capacity reaches 18,534.82 MW, of which 3 GW are wind and 1.8 GW are photovoltaic. Meanwhile, hydropower leads with 6.6 GW.

Romania achieves milestone with a robust pipeline of renewable projects reaching 55,511 MW of approved capacity for evacuation.
Between October and November 2024, the number of projects with approved technical connection notices (ATR) grew by 3.3%, reaching 1,191 active projects. During the same period, the approved capacity increased by 5.18%, marking a significant leap in Romania’s commitment to the energy transition.
Of the approved projects, 610 have signed connection contracts, representing an 8.93% increase from the previous month. These projects total an approved capacity of 24,884 MW, equivalent to 134% of the current installed capacity and a 16.5% rise compared to October.
In addition, 341 projects have obtained construction permits, reflecting a 9.29% monthly growth. Of these, 27 projects include energy storage facilities with a total capacity of 1,329 MW.
These initiatives represent a maximum approved capacity for evacuation of 12,363 MW. Additionally, there are 119 parks with signed connection contracts, construction permits, and establishment authorizations issued by ANRE, totaling 4,393 MW—a 5.4% increase in capacity from October to November.
In this context, the approved renewable energy projects (55,511 MW) represent nearly three times the current installed capacity, underscoring the transformative potential of new investments in the sector.
Grid Infrastructure: Distribution by Network Operator
The integration of these capacities depends on the grid infrastructure. ANRE reports the maximum approved evacuation capacities for projects with signed connection contracts, construction permits issued to the operator, and scheduled to come online between 2024 and 2033, totaling 12,186 MW.
Among the most relevant operators, Transelectrica leads with 7,673 MW approved, followed by DEER (1,521 MW) and DEO (1,030 MW). This distribution highlights the urgent need for investments in transmission and distribution networks to ensure the stability of the electrical system.
